FISH GRAVY

Fish Gravy is prepared in many ways. There are a variety of fishes which goes well for gravy and for fry too. I have used tilapia for gravy. Even salmon goes well for gravy. When fish gravy is tangy, it really tastes good. I have learnt this recipe from my mother-in-law. It goes well with rice, idli, dosas. When you prepare fish gravy try to have it after few hours because immediately prepared and eaten doesn't taste well. Masalas should be absorbed by the fish well. You can have this fish gravy for 2 days.

Ingredients:
1 full tilapia fish(cut into pieces)
8-10 small onions
1/2 tbsp cumin seeds
1/2 tbsp pepper
3-4 cloves
1/2 inch cinnamon
1 tomato
8-9 garlic cloves
1/2 inch ginger
2 tbsp shredded coconut
1 cup coconut milk
small lemon size tamarind soaked in 1 cup of hot water
1/2 onion finely chopped
1 tomato finely chopped
2 green chillies
few curry leaves
1/2 tbsp red chilli powder
1/2 tsp turmeric powder
1 tbsp coriander powder
coriander leaves
oil
salt

Method:
1. Wash and clean the fish using salt, lemon juice and turmeric.
2. In a blender grind small onions, cumin seeds, pepper, cloves cinnamon, tomato, garlic cloves, ginger, and coconut into a fine paste.
3. In a kadai add 4 -5 tbsp oil, curry leaves, green chillies saute for 2 mins, add finely chopped onions and fry until onions turn golden brown. Next, add finely chopped tomatoes and saute until tomatoes are cooked. Add turmeric, red chilli, coriander powder and saute for 2-3 mins.
4. Add ground masala paste required salt, tamarind water, 1 cup of water and mix well. Cover and cook. Keep sauting in-between by opening the lid. Once the raw smell goes and oil starts leaving at the sides add coconut milk and cook for 4-5 mins.
5. Reduce the flame. Now slowly start adding fish pieces one by one. Again cover the lid and cook for 7-8 mins. Check whether fish is been cooked well and switch off the flame. Garnish with coriander leaves and serve hot.
Enjoy with hot rice, idli or dosa!!

Note:
1. Try to use rock salt while cleaning the fish.
2. Once you start adding the fish pieces in step 5 try not to stir the gravy because fish will be cooked very soon and if you try to stir it might break.
