RADISH SAMBAR(MULLANGI SAMBAR)

Radish Sambar is our all time favorite. I prepare sambar using radish, drumstick, beans, carrot, brinjal etc. There are different methods of preparing sambar. I usually prepare in two ways. One is by using sambar powder and other one is by grinding method using coconut. This one I prepared by using sambar powder. In my future recipe I will be sharing the grinding method too.

Ingredients:
1/2 cup toor dal (soak in water for 15 mins)
1- 2 small size white radish(cut it in round small pieces)
4-5 sambar onions(finely chopped)
1 tomato(finely chopped)
1/2 - 1 tbsp sambar powder(I used homemade sambar powder)
Small gooseberry size tamarind(soaked in 1/2 cup of water
1/4 tsp mustard seeds
1/4 tsp black pepper
Pinch of hing
Few curry leaves
1-2 red chillies
Coriander leaves
Salt

Method:
1. Pressure cook dal for 4-5 whistles adding 3 cups of water. Once the pressure subsides and cools mash the dal nicely. Keep it aside.
2. In the same cooker add 1 tbsp of oil, black pepper, onions and fry until onions turns light brown, now add tomatoes and fry for 3-4 mins. Add radish and sambar powder, saute for 2 mins. Add tamarind extract.
3. Now add cooked and mashed dal, 1/4 cup water with required salt. Close the pressure cooker, leave for 2 -3 whistles.
4. Seasoning - In a small kadai add 1 tbsp oil, mustard seeds, curry leaves and red chillies. Once the mustard seeds splutters add hing. Add this seasoning to the sambar and garnish with coriander leaves.

Serve hot with rice!!!
